Homophobia Rears Its Ugly Head Yet Again…
January 31, 2013
Earlier in the week, 49ers CB Chris Culliver was asked “How would an openly gay NFL player be accepted in the locker room?” His response, “I don’t do the gay guys. I don’t do that,” was aired on Artie Lange’s radio show Tuesday, via Yahoo! Sports. He went on to discuss how he would feel about a homosexual playing on his own team. “We don’t have any gay guys on the team,” Culliver said. “They gotta get up outta here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff.” If a player was gay, Culliver suggested the player should keep that fact to himself. “Yeah, come out 10 years later after that,” Culliver said. Really!?
Of course on Wednesday Culliver released a sorry (not sorry) response scripted by his PR agent. “The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel.”
Come on now people, its 2013 and people are still infected with prejudice states of mind. I’m sure Culliver would have been outraged if a white player had said “We don’t have any black guys on the team. They gotta get up outta here if there are some. Can’t be with them black guys.” or something to that effect… As a Christian I don’t necessarily agree with homosexuality, however a person’s sexuality is their business, period. I would never belittle, disrespect, nor isolate someone who is different from myself. Hopefully Chris can turn this embarrassing situation into a learning experience. Incidents like this one proves that we have a long way to go in achieving true equality in America.
